You've picked the venue, sorted the marquee and chosen the flowers. Then someone asks, "Where will everyone go to the toilet?"
It's not the most romantic part of wedding planning, but it matters. Many fields, farms and garden venues simply don't have enough toilets for a full wedding crowd. Getting wedding toilet hire in Wales sorted early means your guests stay comfortable from the first photo to the last dance.
We're K & S Toilets, a local supplier of event toilet hire across Mid Wales, Powys, Herefordshire and Shropshire. Here are seven things we'd check before booking toilets for a marquee wedding.
1. Check How Many Toilets Your Guests Will Need
The number of guests is a good starting point, but it isn't the whole story.
Think about the day, not just the headcount
Ask yourself a few simple questions:
- How many guests are coming in the day, and how many in the evening?
- How long will people be at the venue?
- Will there be a drinks reception, a long meal or a late bar?
- What toilets does the venue already have, and are they close to the marquee?
More drinks and longer days mean busier toilets. Queues tend to build up right after the meal and speeches, so it's worth planning for those moments.
Ask about your options
Rather than relying on a fixed formula, tell your hire company about your plans and ask what they'd suggest. They'll have seen plenty of weddings. For some larger events, portable urinals can also be worth a look, and we offer those too.
2. Choose the Right Type of Wedding Toilet
The best choice depends on your venue, your guests, the space you have and your budget.
Standard portable toilets
Our standard event toilets are self-contained. That means they don't need a water supply or a waste connection, so they work well in fields, gardens and other rural spots with no permanent facilities. They come with toilet tissue and antibacterial hand wash.
Just remember to check that the delivery vehicle can reach your chosen spot and that the ground is suitable.
Don't forget accessible toilets
It's easy to think an accessible toilet is only needed if a guest asks for one. It's much better to think about it early. Some of your guests may have limited mobility, and it's kinder to plan ahead than to scramble on the day.
Our easy-access units have internal handrails, a low-level toilet and a non-slip floor. Some also have baby-changing tables, which is handy if little ones are on the guest list. You can see the options on our accessible portable toilets page.
3. Pick a Good Spot for the Toilets
This is especially important for weddings on farmland, private estates and open fields.
Firm, level ground
Look for ground that is firm and fairly flat. Avoid spots where water collects or where flooding could happen. Leave enough room for doors to open and for guests to queue without crowding.
Close, but not too close
Guests shouldn't have to trek across a field, but you probably don't want the toilets right beside the catering tent, the dining area or your photo spots. If you can, add some screening, and keep the entrance and walkway clear.
Lighting after dark
If your reception runs into the evening, think about lighting and clear signs so people can find their way easily. For more on positioning, have a read of Where Should I Place a Portable Toilet?.
4. Check Delivery Access Before You Book
A beautiful rural venue can be tricky for delivery vehicles. It's far better to find that out now than on the morning of the wedding.
Gates, tracks and turning space
Have a look at:
- How wide the gates and lanes are
- Low branches or anything overhead
- Soft grass, uneven ground or steep slopes
- Whether there's room for a vehicle to deliver and collect
Tell your supplier everything
When you ask for a quote, give the full venue address and postcode, and mention any access problems. Your supplier should then confirm whether your chosen spot is suitable before delivery. We work across rural parts of Mid Wales and nearby areas, so tricky access is something we know well, but we do ask customers to think about site conditions when booking.
5. Ask How the Toilets Will Be Cleaned and Serviced
Guests expect clean toilets all day, so it's worth asking what's included.
What comes with the hire?
Check whether the units arrive clean and stocked with the basics, such as toilet tissue and hand wash. Ours do.
Longer or busier weddings
If you have a large guest list or a long reception, ask about servicing. We can arrange planned service visits, and for suitable larger or multi-day events, on-site attendants to help keep things clean and stocked. Don't assume every booking includes this, though. Have a chat with your supplier about what will work best for you.
6. Plan for Wet Weather and Evening Use
Welsh weather can be unpredictable, so it helps to have a wet-weather plan.
Rain and mud
Grass that feels firm during a site visit can turn soft after a few days of rain. Talk to your hire company about ground conditions before delivery, and check that the route to the toilets still works if the weather turns.
Safe paths after sunset
Think about:
- Lighting along the route
- Clear signs
- Avoiding slippery or uneven sections
- Keeping step-free routes usable for guests who need them
Guests shouldn't have to pick their way through dark or muddy ground in their wedding shoes.
7. Confirm the Hire Details Before the Big Day
Before you say yes to a quote, run through this quick checklist:
- What types of toilets are available?
- How many units should we consider?
- Are accessible facilities available?
- Is our chosen location suitable?
- Are delivery and collection included in the quote?
- What cleaning and servicing can you arrange?
- When will the toilets arrive, and when will they be collected?
- Are there any extra charges we should know about?
When you ask for a quote, have your wedding date, hire period, guest numbers, venue location and any special requirements ready. It makes things quicker for everyone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Marquee Wedding Toilet Hire
How many portable toilets do I need for a marquee wedding?
It depends on your guest numbers, how long the event lasts, how much drink is being served, what the venue already has and whether anyone needs accessible facilities. The best thing to do is ask your supplier for advice based on your plans.
Can portable toilets go on grass?
Yes, as long as the ground is suitable. It should be firm and level, and you should think about how rain could affect it.
Do portable toilets need water or waste connections?
Our standard self-contained event toilets don't. Other types of toilet may have different needs, so always check the specification before you book.
Can I hire an accessible toilet for a wedding?
Yes. We offer accessible units. Talk to your supplier about what your guests need and whether the route to the toilet is suitable.
When should I book wedding toilets?
As soon as you know your date, venue and rough guest numbers. That gives you time to talk through availability, the units you need and delivery access.
